Alyeska is a young malamute who came into rescue with her daughter Pooka because their owners moved and were not able to take them along.

Aly is timid initially until she get to know you, greeting you with her ears down and her teeth clicking in a submissive way. She is quick to recognize a familiar friendly face, however, and will belly up for a tummy rub. She has had no exposure to young children, but does seem quite gently and loving.

This girl has lived exclusively outdoors, spending a good deal of time in a kennel run with her daughter. She is house naive and it might take a few weeks to convince her that indoors is a safe place to be. At her temporary foster home, the toy basket was a great distraction and kept her from pacing nervously around inside the house. Aly will likely need to be house trained, although she had no accidents in this temporary foster home.

Aly loves car rides and walks, but she is leash naive and will need to be trained to walk with one. She is smart and wants to please, so training her to do anything should be easy.

Her family reports that she is NOT cat friendly.

Alyeska is being cared for in the Tri-Cities, WA area. If you are interested in meeting Aly, please submit an application and we will get your home visit scheduled ASAP!

Update from Aly's foster home:
Aly is blossoming. She is so very smart, one of the smartest I have seen. Aly is getting to be an expert at sitting, she knows her name and will come when called. On leash, she is a puller, but gets settled in after about 10 minutes into the walk. She can take treats nicely, is not food aggressive but will try to steal a rawhide or treat from the others. (And they let her). Alyeska is definitely the alpha dog here, and she likes it that way! She is learning that Ken and I are even above her in the hierarchy, and she seems OK with that too. She has a lot of energy, and likes to keep busy with toys - she likes her tennis ball, and will fetch and even sometimes let you have it back to throw again for her. Aly likes to chew - toys, rawhides, etc are handy to have to keep her from chewing things you do not want her to, and she likes to bury EVERYTHING she can get. I think she is a collector of sorts! Aly definitely needs to go to a home with NO cats or small dogs. Aly does fine with dogs close to her size or bigger, but smaller dogs are like cats to her. She does like to woo-woo and talk to you. Howling with sirens is fun for her too!

Foster mom update:
She has blossomed here and is coming into her own. The initial shyness and submissiveness she had shown is gone. Aly is an active girl, she does like to keep busy, she likes toys of any sort, and rawhides are good too. She is a digger, and does bury everything she can. Her, Balto and Scout (the resident Mal) get along famously, she is a good candidate for a home with another Mal or large breed dog. Aly is smart and eager to please, she wants to do the right thing to make the humans happy.
