AURORA is a friendly 5-year-old Mal who will lean right on in for attention and petting. People are her favs but she is OK around other large dogs her size. This handsome 110-pound Malamute was sent to a shelter after she got in trouble with some neighboring livestock. After doing some time in the clink, in April 2022 she came into rescue with WAMAL and went into a foster home. Aurora is friendly and easy going, has been socialized well with all humans, but is extremely true to her breed. She is very independent and cannot go to a home with small animals or cats due to her strong prey drive instinct. Aurora walks nicely on leash without pulling and shows no aggression towards people or other dogs—squirrels and other small critters are a different story though. She’s amazing in the car, gets right in and sits quietly until you arrive at your destination. Aurora’s foster caregiver noticed a lump on her neck, and after several diagnostic procedures it was determined that Aurora has two fluid-filled submandibular masses. One of the masses had tripled in size in less than 3 months and is starting to put pressure on her larynx and hyoid bone. While testing thus far does not show malignancy, its growth is now clearly compressing her throat and must be treated in the near term to avoid breathing and swallowing issues. WAMAL is evaluating the best course of action to care for this friendly pup!
