Kokanee
10/19/04
Kokanee is doing great and she and Toby are inseparable. She is generally more obedient than Toby which works out nicely for him because he gets to be off leash more often since we can trust her to come back (with him tagging along behind). She is still a jumper and we've had no success breaking her of that habit but other than that, things are all going well here and we're thrilled to have Kokanee as part of our family. She's a great camper and travels well in the car. She and Toby are outside 90% of the time (cause they take up a lot of room when they have to be everywhere together...and they always have to be together!) but they seem to have adjusted just fine to that (that was new for Toby as well). All in all, I think she's a great fit for our family and she seems happy. Toby thinks it's great to have a playmate.
Misty
10/06/04
It's been almost a year since Misty joined the Wallace Clan...and life couldn't be better.
Misty has really relaxed and almost all of her formerly abused behavior is gone. She now let us pet and brush her rump without cowering and all her food-issues seem to be gone as well. She even lays down in front of her bowl and leisurely eats her food one bite at a time. No more food-suction. Amazing!
When Misty first arrived, she was a bit lonely and sad. We thought she might be missing her foster-play friends. So...we decided to get her a companion. A friend introduced us to a great Malamute that was rescued -on his last day before being put down- from a shelter in Idaho. The dogs took to each other immediately. If they aren't eating or sleeping they are playing. Their energy is endless.
Kiko and Misty are completely inseparable. They are actually known at the vets office for voluntarily squishing themselves -two large malamutes- into one small kennel when they get baths, so they don't have to be apart.
They are the best tempered, happy, fun dogs I can imagine.
Thanks WAMAL for saving them so they could share our lives.
Harley
10/05/04
Just wanted to drop you a quick note about Harley who we adopted in July. After the hairy first week (he was so scared we couldn't get him to do anything) everything settled down. He has gained weight and the vet wants him to gain about 15 lbs more to reach his ideal weight of 110. Harley loves his German Shepherd sister and his three cats. We are one big happy pack and he has shown no interest whatsoever in the cats, even the one that has swatted his nose a few times.
Harley loves the water so we take him to the lake often; we took both pups on their first hike together and they had so much fun! Finally, some downtime while they rested from doing about 3 times as much hiking as us two-leggeds.
All is well for Harley and his new pack!

Mahina - The Life of a Rescue Mal
I Play Hard and Need My Rest
Hello New Family,
I am happy with my new mom. She gives me good treats. She hugs and kisses me a lot. Sometimes she cries. She gave me a bath in Mango Tango shampoo and I smell really nice. You can see my hair growing; it's fluffy and curly. I'm learning to eat the raw food diet...boy, do I ever love those raw chicken legs. Crunch and fling! Dinner made me so happy tonight that I ran around the house (it's small!) from the LR punee to our king sized bed. Slipping on the hardwood kitchen floor. Jumping over the end of the brass bed footrails. I know I'm safe here with my new mom forever.
Cindy (WAMAL Rescue Pres and malamute breeder) came to visit me today and said I am a pure bred malamute. Good size. And not too skinny. She says my coat is going to be thick and long and mom will have to brush me a lot. Mom likes that. She tells me I am beautiful just the way I am. My coat will get snowballs; not like Lishka's which didn't; she was the snow queen.
I went to the Icicle River with mom yesterday. Boy, was that ever fun! Little fish in the water and I tried to catch them with my mouth. We ran at the river's edge and made splashy waves. I like the river; it's really pretty and lots of people wanted to know about me and my adventures. Mom told them my story... then they'd pet me some more. Sometimes they got sad eyes.
I am happy.
Aloha,
Mahina and Momi & The Kiddens
Kokanee
09/17/04
Things are working out very well with Kokanee. We got her as a play mate and companion for our big grey Toby. We were hoping for a great match because she'd bonded with a big grey brother and then they were separated. It's worked out very well. There's some jealousy still, almost a year later from Toby, but they love to play (rough!) and both dogs are a handsome hit when I walk them down the street. Kokanee is more aggressive with other dogs than Toby and she just about ate one of our two cats when he wandered aimlessly into our dog zone (fenced in back yard). An emergency rescue saved him and all must be forgiven because the cat is still interested in Kokanee (either that or he's just very, very stupid).
Here's pictures... thanks for asking about her.
