Update from foster mom - Kavik is gaining confidence and losing his shyness thanks to his bonding with another male mal. He is a quick learner as evidenced by this statement from his foster mom after they'd played awhile, I led Simba around the yard with Kavik following right on Simbas tail. Then, I petted Simba in front of Kavik and said good boy, Simba. After Simba moved away, Kavik walked right up to me and placed his head under my hand for his pet without bowing his head or showing any fear!

Kavik has tons of potential to be a great dog.

In 1968 Walt Morey wrote a book called Kavik the Wolfdog about a winning sled dog who faces incredible odds to make his way back to a boy who rescued him after a plane crash. There is no Wolf in this boy, but not only does he look like the original Kavik, he has also faced a past no dog should have to experience. Kavik, which means Wolverine, is one of the Alaska Four that came into the Mat-Su shelter on January 20th, 2011. He was part of a rescue of 160 dogs who were found on four foot chains with no food or water. Kavik is missing most of the fur on his tail right now, but he will have the most amazing plume once it grows back. He is a very noble boy, who likes to sit back and observe what is going on in his new surroundings before tearing all out and playing with everyone. He likes walking on the leash, has a huge smile and rode well in the crate in the car from the airport. Kavik is very food motivated so should be easily trainable with treats and a lot of positive reinforcement. Potty training will be needed as he is not house broken yet, but he has spent a lot of time crated over the past two months and is comfortable there, so house breaking using a crate will be the quickest route. Once Kavik has a chance to get used to his new surroundings he will most likely do well in a home with dog savvy kids while supervised as we always recommend with snow dogs. He is also very athletic looking and would make a great outdoor partner for camping, hiking, snow shoeing or skjoring. This handsome boy is just waiting for the opportunity to shower you with love and affection.

Kavik and the other AK four are not Malamutes, but most likely Malamute, Siberian Husky, Alaskan Husky mixes. He will probably top out at about 85 lbs. He has a beautiful fluffy coat that will need brushing on a regular basis and will be bathed before going to his new home.

Kavik is being lovingly cared for in Seattle, WA.
