Welcome to WAMAL

Washington Alaskan Malamute Adoption League (WAMAL) was formed in 1998 by Cindy Neely to help with Malamute Rescue in Washington State and since then has expanded into Oregon.  WAMAL rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes Malamutes (or Mal-enough-a-mutes!) who, through no fault of their own, find themselves without a home or in need of a new home.

Serving the greater Northwest we are also part of a national rescue network, AMAL, that covers other areas of the US. WAMAL provides hope to families that must rehome their malamutes when life has taken a sharp detour; training support to those families desperately working to keep their 4-legged family members; works with shelters and takes into rescue strays and those pups needing an extra level of thoroughness in the adoption process; and, actively recruits adopters and foster homes.

We are a 100% volunteer run, 501c.3 non-profit organization that is celebrating over 20 years!  Our volunteers come from all walks of life and locations and WAMAL is only able to do what we do because of this generous and dedicated team of volunteers.  They truly make it possible to save the lives of this gentle, stubborn, and loving working breed. WAMAL has rescued many hundreds of malamutes to date and each holds a place in our hearts.

  YUKI
YUKI means snow in Japanese and that is exactly what this girl loves!  Give her a nice cold snowy day and she is happy. She is a lover and conversationalist who is great with kids and toddlers and enjoys meeting new people. At backyard BBQs she is an attentive hostess, looking to share your meal. YUKI does well with all dogs, big or small, she is ready to play.  But would be happy in a one dog home as she wants all of the pets for herself.  She knows basic commands and walks well on a leash. She is content with several short strolls a day, but also loves a good hike or jog. Car ride? Camping?  As long as she is with you on an adventure she is thrilled.  YUKI does not need a large yard and does well in a big 48x30x30 crate.  However, if you have a yard, that would be great too. But she would need a good wipe down if she laid in the grass because she does have some allergie...read more about YUKI
  KANGA
KANGA  thrives on adventure and would love an active adopter who will take him on adventures and give him plenty of play time! Kanga is a loyal guy and will be a great companion for someone. He LOVES the snow in the winter and to swim in the summer.  His number one favorite activity (even more than walks and treats) is going for car rides! He likes feeling the wind in his face through an open window (car surfing). Kanga is incredibly observant and curious. Kanga’s comfort with people has grown significantly while in rescue. He does need a little time to build trust, but eventually he will follow you around and give you kisses! He is also quite affectionate and loyal to those he bonds with. Kanga has excellent house manners and is happy to chill on his bed or lay beside you as you work. He has basic training and knows: sit, down, come, get it, stay, and release and is ready for the next level of training. He is very treat motivated and respon...read more about KANGA
  SHELBY
Little Miss SHELBY is a sweetheart with a big smile and a nonstop tail wag!  Based on her size, we expect she is a malamute and husky mix, bringing the best of both breeds.  She knows basic commands, "sit", "down" and "wait" but could use further training.  She is food motivated which will help when teaching her new commands and tricks.  SHELBY is good on the leash and will enjoy joining you on all of your outdoor adventures.  She is a  loving, playful, active girl who generally does well with other dogs once they have established who is boss in the house (hint: it's her!). SHELBY has food allergies that will require a special diet and lifetime of medication.  Therefore, she needs a family that can afford her medications, special food and has the time to administrator them. SHELBY would love for you to open up your home to her and she promises to not steal the co...read more about SHELBY
  KEANU (Adoption Pending)
***ADOPTION PENDING*** KEANU is a sweet Alaskan Malamute & German Shepherd mix who has much to teach us about overcoming adversity.  He unfortunately, had both his eyes removed recently due to uveitis, a painful condition that required this surgery to make him feel more comfortable. A home with other dogs would be ideal for KEANU.   He gets SO much confidence from other dogs, not only in navigating at home and when out, but also with learning new things, and feeling secure at home.  KEANU needs an active home that will take him out for daily walks, on easy hikes, to the beach, etc. He is NOT shy with walks and hikes--he's out front pulling and is very strong. He is working on his leash manners . He has done really well with easy hikes and LOVES it. He enjoys the outdoors and needs a 6 foot fenced large yard because he is tall and can easily climb over a shorter fence.   While in hi...read more about KEANU (Adoption Pending)
  SUMMIT
SUMMIT has a typical malamute personality.  Independent, smart, playful, and affectionate, but only when he wants to be. He is crate trained, however, if he's left in the crate, for what he considers is too long, he will find a way out.  A large fenced yard for him to run zoomies and burn energy would be ideal.  He also enjoys long daily walk where he can explore, but could use some practice on his leash training commands.  After the walk, he loves to cuddle and relax with his humans. SUMMIT gets very excited at seeing other dogs as he wants to play, but not all dogs appreciate his enthusiasm.  It may be best that he is in an only dog family.  Summit's furever family should have the time to spend with him and take him on many adventures.  Important - Please note.   This dog is being listed by WAMAL but is residing with its owner. While WAMAL has evaluated this dog in person any info we have listed here is i...read more about SUMMIT
  NACHES
NACHES is a sweet and friendly boy who is eager to learn new things.  He loves people, attention and treats!  He should be easy to train to become an even better boy.  NACHES likes playing chase and socailizing with other dogs.   A furever home with a fenced yard would allow him to enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment and also run a few zoomies.  NACHES was rescused from a local shelter so he has not had the opportunity to live the life he deserves full of love and adventures.  If you are looking for a sweet buddy, NACHES is ready to be your best friend.
  BRUTUS
Despite his name, BRUTUS, is a big cuddler and loves his humans.  But does live up to his name with other dogs and children.  He needs to be the only "child" in the house. BRUTUS walks well on a leash and enjoys long walks where he can explore.  He is a smart boy and knows many words; Sit, Come, Down, Stay, Shake, Kiss, Go Potty, and You Stink!  When BRUTUS first meets you he will be cautious, but after a few minutes, realizing you are OK, he will be your best friend. BRUTUS needs a new forever home that is spacious where he can roam freely inside.  He is not a fan of crating and kennels but a fenced yard would be great. His future family should have the time to spend with him, taking him on outdoor adventures and a big bed to share at night!
  NICOLE
NICOLE is an energetic girl who loves playing with toys and her sister, DAKOTA.  When you first meet NICOLE she will run to greet you becase she loves to meet people, especially if she receives pets and attention.  She would enjoy a nice yard to feel safe in, but is perfectly happy being indoors or going on car rides with you.  She knows some commands like "sit", "lay" and "shake".   NICOLE and DAKOTA are a bonded pair and need to be adopted together.  They both will excel in a furever home that will spoil them making them feel like princesses. She is currently living at our Malley Valley resort, socializing with other dogs and our volunteers.
  DAKOTA
DAKOTA is a sweet girl who loves playing with toys and her sister, NICOLE.  When you first meet DAKOTA she may be a little cautious but will warm up quickly because she also loves pets and attention.  She would enjoy a nice yard to feel safe in, but is perfectly happy being indoors or going on car rides with you.  She knows some commands like "sit", "lay" and "shake".   DAKOTA and NICOLE are a bonded pair and need to be adopted together.  They both will excel in a furever home that will spoil them making them feel like princesses.   ODEZA (Dezy)
ODEZA, often called DEZY is a lovable girl, who is looking for adventures.  She likes to play with her toys, especially if they squeak!  She knows several basic commands; sit, stay, down, and come (well come when she wants to). DEZY is selective of the dogs she will be friends with, if they make her A list, then she will invite them to run and play.  She will need to be slowly introduced to other dogs so that she can determine if they meet her Diva requirements. A large, secure fenced yard will be important for DEZY.  She is smart and will find a way to escape if she gets bored.  She loves to go on walks, hikes, or any fun trip you would like to include her on. After a long day DEZY is ready to be inside and be lazy with you, chilling with your favorite book or TV show. The ideal family for DEZY will have time to spend with her and keep her busy and give her all the love she deserves. ODEZA is currently enjoying the amenities of our Malley V...read more about ODEZA (Dezy)
  JONY
JONY is a sweet and energetic guy.  He enjoys playing with toys, especially if it is a stuffed toy that he can rip apart, all that stuffing flying around is fun!   JONY knows basic commands, sit, down, come, often he will give you his opinions of the request with a few Whooos. Show him a treat and he will quickly realize that completing a command is possible.  He should be easy to train further as long as treats are involved.  JONY likes to play with other large dogs and is aware of his size wanting to the be alpha in the group, leaning in to show the others he is the one in charge.  He loves attention from the humans especially if he can have belly rubs and lay on the couch.  A large yard to play chase in or with toys would be a good place to introduce JONY to playing with older children but the children must be considerate and understand he is a big boy. Nice long walks, hikes, runs, car rides to an adventure make J...read more about JONY
  HADES
HADES is a sweet and gentle boy who thrives on attention from his humans.   Don't let his looks fool you, he may look more like a German Shephard, but he has the personality of a Malamute! Recently HADES lived in an apartment, but he prefers the quiet country life and is not used to the loud city experiences.  He is Ok with several short walks each day, but a nice scenic walk or hike makes him very happy.  A car ride with the windows cracked is always a great way to start an adventure. HADES knows many commands.  Basic commands like "sit", "down" and "stay".  Loving commands "hug", "kiss" and "cuddle" and fun commands like "dance" and "go through" where he will run through your legs like a tunnel.  He has a large vocabulary that you will enjoy playing with him for hours. Despite his age, he still has a lot of puppy energy and does get along with larg...read more about HADES
  SIRIUS
SIRIUS also called "SI" is a very friendly and full of puppy energy.  He loves to play, run and bounce around.  He is a talker and wants to make sure his people hear his opinions. As you can see from the photos, SI is a stunning red color and a large boy with the potential of becoming much larger.  His parents were both over 160 pounds!  Due to his size his future family should not have small children or small dogs.  However, he would do great with other large dogs and be part of their pack. SIRIUS is a highly intelligent and treat motivated.  He knows many commands both in English and German; "sit", "stay", "come", "heel" and "off" are just a few.   Of course, he is a typical Mal and will choose not to listen sometimes.  But do not let him fool you.  He hears you and knows better. Ideally his furever home will have a large yard to play in and the time t...read more about SIRIUS
  POOKE
POOKE is a sweet, loving girl with a big heart.  Due to having a hard life, she craves attention wanting lots of pets, hugs and belly rubs.  Despite her age, POOKE still has a lot of energy and will enjoy walks and a large yard to play in. POOKE knows basic commands; sit, no, wait and catch.  She loves treats and is eager to learn more.  She gets along well with other large dogs, enjoying their company.  But if she could be the only dog in the house, she would love being the center of attention. A family full of love, encouragement, who has time for walks and a comforting place for her to call her own is an ideal for POOKE to live her golden years. Important - Please note.   This dog is being listed by WAMAL but is residing with its owner.   OAKLEY
OAKLEY is a happy, loving and eager to please boy.  He is very energic due to his young age and loves to play with people, children and other dogs.   OAKLEY is smart and needs training, which should be easy to do since he loves treats.   Currently OAKLEY lives in an outdoor kennel so he has not had the opportunity yet to learn indoor boundaries.  But given the chance he would appreciate a doggie bed, couch or even your bed! OAKLEY's future owners will need to have an understanding of the breed, the time and patience to train this teenager as he grows into his paws and becomes a well behaved adult.
  BANE
BANE is a sweet and well mannered dog who is very smart.  He is so smart that if he gets bored he will find things to do like opening doors to see what is on the other side.  He prefers being outside where he can sniff, explore and watch the neighbors. always looking for some entertainment.  However, he does prefer a big yard with a tall fence because he has learned how to jump over short fences and even how to open gates. BANE has a large vocabulary and knows: sit, stay, leave it, wait, stop, shake, speak, lay down, belly rubs, bring your bowl, turn and lets go for a walk.  Being a typical Malamute, if he decides he is not in the mood to participate in his human's commands he will lay down and do the "I am a rock" pose until he gets his way. Other mellow dogs, both big and small are always fun to play with, but BANE prefers to go home to his quiet house where he does not need to share his humans.  BANE also enjoys playing with children, how...read more about BANE
  WINTER
WINTER was found in the woods and wandering around on roads so we know little about her personality.  She is learning to trust humans but is very cautious right now.  She seems to be OK with other dogs but has not actively played with any yet. WINTER may be a mixed breed and estimated to be around 4 years old.  Her weight is estimated at 65 to 75 pounds.  She was recently spayed and vaccinated.  Currently WINTER is staying in a kennel at a facility where she was found.  She would benefit from a foster or adopting family that has the resources, knowledge and patience to help her show her true personality and enjoy the life she deserves.   Important - Please note.   This dog is being listed by WAMAL but is residing with its owner. While WAMAL has evaluated this dog in person any info we have listed here is information provided by the current owners.   ZEKE
ZEKE is a sweet boy who is happiest when he is hanging out with his humans.  His craves a daily routine of walks, food, naps, play time, treats, more naps, exploring his yard, dinner and ready for bed by 7 pm.   If he is not happy about something, he won't hestiate to tell you his thoughts with a few Whoo Whoos. A home with a fenced yard for ZEKE to enjoy the sunshine, sniff the air and watch the neighborhood would be ideal.  ZEKE knows many commands; sit, lay down, stay, come and  load up are a few.  He could easily learn more with a few treats to motivate him. ZEKE does well with other large dogs, especially if they are female, and with older considerate children.  He doesn't realize his size, therefore it is best he does not play with small dogs, or young children.   If you take ZEKE on an adventure in a car he will fuss and make some noise because he is not a big fan of car rides.  But once he arrives at t...read more about ZEKE
  KAI
KAI is a young boy full of potential and energy.  He was in a shelter where he became very cautious of people.  Now he is in a foster where he is developing, learning and socializing.  KAI enjoys taking long walks, playing with toys and being near his primary human.  He loves playing with small dogs, but is nervous around larger dogs.  With more time and encouragement he will realize big dogs are fun too. A new family should be understanding and willing to work with this boy, knowing he is still a puppy and like all puppies they can be goofy one minute and shy the next. This is an opportunity to help KAI become your new best friend!
  DAISY
DAISY is a friendly girl eager to please her humans. At only 2 years old, she still behaves like a silly puppy.  She loves to play, run zoomies and relax in her crate after she tuckers out. DAISY knows many commands; sit, come, heal, down and stay.  She likes treats and will be easy to train further.  She enjoys taking walks on her leash and would appreciate a big yard to run around in. Playing with other large dogs is another favorite activity especially if there is a good game of chase.  However, due to her size, it is difficult for DAISY to play with small dogs. A family with considerate children would also be fun for DAISY.  More humans to play with her, the better! DAISY's future furever home should have plenty of space for her, time to exercise her, train her and understanding of the Malamute breed. Important - Please note.   This dog is being listed by WAMAL but is residing with its owner. While WAMAL has evaluated th...read more about DAISY

  NANUKA
The lovely NANUKA is described as VERY friendly with people and loves getting attention and pets—she has no aggressive tendencies towards humans but can be quite vocal when wanting attention!  This social butterfly would love to join you on your daily walks, greeting friends and neighbors you meet along the way. Nanuka is described as very calm and low-energy without much interest in toys, but this lovely girl has a unique bedtime ritual--she runs playfully back and forth, evading capture but stopping quickly for a little lean-in.  After repeating several times, she takes a flying leap onto the bed, lies down, and rolls over on her back for tummy rubs. She walks well on leash and knows commands including 'sit', 'down', 'go to bed', and 'shake'.  Nanuka would do really well in a home as a single dog--she would prefer to not share her home with another pup - she wants to be the queen!  She is ho...read more about NANUKA

COURTESY LISTING Hi…my name is Kaiya! I didn’t know my name before I was found, Kaiya means forgiveness in Japanese. I am a Husky & Malamute mix and will turn two this year. It is my dream to be with someone that loves me and I promise to love you back forever!   I was spayed in December, weigh 85 lbs, and I am microchipped. Still learning manners, I used to be worried about not having food so I would use my voice to let people know. I learned to trust so I am much better but sometimes I worry, however I am being trained in how to be a good girl.   I really like to run on the grass, play fetch and I like toys! I like car rides but sometimes I am afraid, and I bark out the window. I don’t make noise unless I am talking. I jump on nice people because I am excited and happy, but my trainer is teaching me not to do that. It's exciting to sniff on walks and meet other dogs and people! I am a very good ...read more about KAIYA (Courtesy Listing)
  HUTCH
HUTCH has had quite the journey into rescue, along with his friend Hutch, having traveled halfway across the country with assistance from AMAL (Alaskan Malamute Assistance League). He is understandably nervous and shy with our volunteers, we hope that he will settle in soon and show us more of his personality. HUTCH needs a family that has the time and patience to dedicate to him to help him learn how great a malamute life can be. He is currently living at our Malley Valley resort, socializing with other dogs and our volunteers.
  ELDING (Courtesy Listing)
COURTESY LISTING If you would like to learn more about ELDING please contact Raven Pridemoore or Jasmine Kelly at 509-948-5608 or 509-595-4222 ELDING is a 3 year old Alaskan Malamute/Husky mix. He is a high energy pup who will definitely need a family with a yard or who goes on lots of walks/runs. Due to his imposing size some dogs have not been nice to him, therefore causing him to be mistrustful of other dogs when they first meet. But once he does warm up to the new dog he loves to play and rough house with them. If he is able to burn that energy he is such a good cuddly house dog, but like others of his breed if he doesn't get it all out he can be destructive.  ELDING is crate trained and has a bed that he has made his won. He also comes with a slow feeder and a few bones that he loves.  IMPORTANT - Please Note:  ELDING is being listed as a courtesy. COURTESY LISTING Meet Max! This handsome feller is one of our newest furry friends here at the shelter! He was brought to us as a stray and was unfortunately never reclaimed by an owner. Max is a Malamute/Husky mix around 3 years old. Max is super sweet and lovable to people but we aren't sure how he is with other dogs or cats just yet. He is quite the character, LOVES to talk and has quite the personality! Max would make an excellent hiking or running partner. He can be an escape artist, so he would need a home with a fully fenced yard or maybe even a big enough dog kennel for him to stay in when no one is home to supervise him! If you are interested in meeting Max, contact the Humane Society of the Ochocos today at shelterstaff@thehso.org IMPORTANT - Please Note:  Max is being listed as a courtesy. He is a great boy with a whole lotta love to give. He is a gentle giant with a gentle soul. A home with maybe 3 steps at max would be ideal. Fox has had a very rough start at life and we are sure that has lead to him not wanting to share bones, food, bed etc. Resource guards some. Over the months he also started to not get along(fight) with the male dogs in house one being a malamute but that is pretty much normal for a young mal. So Fox needs a female only or only dog home. No cats, livestock or small dogs. Kids over 8 years old that know boundaries! And folks that understand that and respect a dog and their cues.  Fence is mandatory and also a trainer ideal. Fox was found in a haystack alone and in unimaginable pain with h...read more about FOX (Courtesy Listing)

He is shy around most strangers, but warms up more quickly to women than he does men. He can take a while to warm up to those he doesn’t know and he picks and chooses who he wants near him.  He is neutered and has shown his foster mom a high prey drive with small animals - cats, small dogs and chickens. He loves to play with a tug rope, but don’t leave it unattended unless you want to come back to shredded pieces. He loves to play as well, including stealing gloves off your hands.   FREYA (Courtesy Listing)
COURTESY LISTING Hi, my name is Freya! I am around 2 years old.  I am a husky/malamute mix, about 50 lbs. and contain lots of energy. When I first came to the shelter, I was hesitant about my new surroundings and new people but now that I have had time to adjust, I am a big goof! I love to play tag and fetch! Anything that allows me to prance around and burn off energy has my approval.   Due to my bouncy nature, I would do best in a home with kids that are at least 12 years old. I do like to chase so would do well with a cat that is used to being around dogs and their play style. I like other dogs and would love to have a playmate who has similar energy to me.
