Welcome to WAMAL

Washington Alaskan Malamute Adoption League (WAMAL) was formed in 1998 by Cindy Neely to help with Malamute Rescue in Washington State and since then has expanded into Oregon.  WAMAL rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes Malamutes (or Mal-enough-a-mutes!) who, through no fault of their own, find themselves without a home or in need of a new home.

Serving the greater Northwest we are also part of a national rescue network, AMAL, that covers other areas of the US. WAMAL provides hope to families that must rehome their malamutes when life has taken a sharp detour; training support to those families desperately working to keep their 4-legged family members; works with shelters and takes into rescue strays and those pups needing an extra level of thoroughness in the adoption process; and, actively recruits adopters and foster homes.

We are a 100% volunteer run, 501c.3 non-profit organization that is celebrating over 20 years!  Our volunteers come from all walks of life and locations and WAMAL is only able to do what we do because of this generous and dedicated team of volunteers.  They truly make it possible to save the lives of this gentle, stubborn, and loving working breed. WAMAL has rescued many hundreds of malamutes to date and each holds a place in our hearts.

  YUKI (Adoption Pending)
*** Adoption Pending***   YUKI means snow in Japanese and that is exactly what this girl loves!  Give her a nice cold snowy day and she is happy. She is a lover and conversationalist who is great with kids and toddlers and enjoys meeting new people. At backyard BBQs she is an attentive hostess, looking to share your meal. YUKI does well with all dogs, big or small, she is ready to play.  But would be happy in a one dog home as she wants all of the pets for herself.  She knows basic commands and walks well on a leash. She is content with several short strolls a day, but also loves a good hike or jog. Car ride? Camping?  As long as she is with you on an adventure she is thrilled.  YUKI does not need a large yard and does well in a big 48x30x30 crate.  However, if you have a yard, that would be great too. But she would need a good wipe down if she laid in the gras...read more about YUKI (Adoption Pending)
  KANGA
KANGA  thrives on adventure and would love an active adopter who will take him on adventures and give him plenty of play time! Kanga is a loyal guy and will be a great companion for someone. He LOVES the snow in the winter and to swim in the summer.  His number one favorite activity (even more than walks and treats) is going for car rides! He likes feeling the wind in his face through an open window (car surfing). Kanga is incredibly observant and curious. Kanga’s comfort with people has grown significantly while in rescue. He does need a little time to build trust, but eventually he will follow you around and give you kisses! He is also quite affectionate and loyal to those he bonds with. Kanga has excellent house manners and is happy to chill on his bed or lay beside you as you work. He has basic training and knows: sit, down, come, get it, stay, and release and is ready for the next level of training. He is very treat motivated and respon...read more about KANGA
  SHELBY
Little Miss SHELBY is a sweetheart with a big smile and a nonstop tail wag!  Based on her size, we expect she is a malamute and husky mix, bringing the best of both breeds.  She knows basic commands, "sit", "down" and "wait" but could use further training.  She is food motivated which will help when teaching her new commands and tricks.  SHELBY is good on the leash and will enjoy joining you on all of your outdoor adventures.  She is a  loving, playful, active girl who generally does well with other dogs once they have established who is boss in the house (hint: it's her!). SHELBY has food allergies that will require a special diet and lifetime of medication.  Therefore, she needs a family that can afford her medications, special food and has the time to administrator them. SHELBY would love for you to open up your home to her and she promises to not steal the co...read more about SHELBY
  SUMMIT
SUMMIT has a typical malamute personality.  Independent, smart, playful, and affectionate, but only when he wants to be. He is crate trained, however, if he's left in the crate, for what he considers is too long, he will find a way out.  A large fenced yard for him to run zoomies and burn energy would be ideal.  He also enjoys long daily walk where he can explore, but could use some practice on his leash training commands.  After the walk, he loves to cuddle and relax with his humans. SUMMIT gets very excited at seeing other dogs as he wants to play, but not all dogs appreciate his enthusiasm.  It may be best that he is in an only dog family.  Summit's furever family should have the time to spend with him and take him on many adventures.  Important - Please note.   This dog is being listed by WAMAL but is residing with its owner. While WAMAL has evaluated this dog in person any info we have listed here is i...read more about SUMMIT
  NICOLE
NICOLE is an energetic girl who loves playing with toys and her sister, DAKOTA.  When you first meet NICOLE she will run to greet you becase she loves to meet people, especially if she receives pets and attention.  She would enjoy a nice yard to feel safe in, but is perfectly happy being indoors or going on car rides with you.  She knows some commands like "sit", "lay" and "shake".   NICOLE and DAKOTA are a bonded pair and need to be adopted together.  They both will excel in a furever home that will spoil them making them feel like princesses. She is currently living at our Malley Valley resort, socializing with other dogs and our volunteers.
  DAKOTA
DAKOTA is a sweet girl who loves playing with toys and her sister, NICOLE.  When you first meet DAKOTA she may be a little cautious but will warm up quickly because she also loves pets and attention.  She would enjoy a nice yard to feel safe in, but is perfectly happy being indoors or going on car rides with you.  She knows some commands like "sit", "lay" and "shake".   DAKOTA and NICOLE are a bonded pair and need to be adopted together.  They both will excel in a furever home that will spoil them making them feel like princesses.   ODEZA (Dezy)
ODEZA, often called DEZY is a lovable girl, who is looking for adventures.  She likes to play with her toys, especially if they squeak!  She knows several basic commands; sit, stay, down, and come (well come when she wants to). DEZY is selective of the dogs she will be friends with, if they make her A list, then she will invite them to run and play.  She will need to be slowly introduced to other dogs so that she can determine if they meet her Diva requirements. A large, secure fenced yard will be important for DEZY.  She is smart and will find a way to escape if she gets bored.  She loves to go on walks, hikes, or any fun trip you would like to include her on. After a long day DEZY is ready to be inside and be lazy with you, chilling with your favorite book or TV show. The ideal family for DEZY will have time to spend with her, keep her busy, realize that DEZY is the main character in her own diva story and give her all the love she deser...read more about ODEZA (Dezy)
  HADES
HADES is a sweet and gentle boy who thrives on attention from his humans.   Don't let his looks fool you, he may look more like a German Shephard, but he has the personality of a Malamute! Recently HADES lived in an apartment, but he prefers the quiet country life and is not used to the loud city experiences.  He is Ok with several short walks each day, but a nice scenic walk or hike makes him very happy.  A car ride with the windows cracked is always a great way to start an adventure. HADES knows many commands.  Basic commands like "sit", "down" and "stay".  Loving commands "hug", "kiss" and "cuddle" and fun commands like "dance" and "go through" where he will run through your legs like a tunnel.  He has a large vocabulary that you will enjoy playing with him for hours. Despite his age, he still has a lot of puppy energy and does get along with larg...read more about HADES
  SIRIUS
SIRIUS also called "SI" is a very friendly and full of puppy energy.  He loves to play, run and bounce around.  He is a talker and wants to make sure his people hear his opinions. As you can see from the photos, SI is a stunning red color and a large boy with the potential of becoming much larger.  His parents were both over 160 pounds!  Due to his size his future family should not have small children or small dogs.  However, he would do great with other large dogs and be part of their pack. SIRIUS is a highly intelligent and treat motivated.  He knows many commands both in English and German; "sit", "stay", "come", "heel" and "off" are just a few.   Of course, he is a typical Mal and will choose not to listen sometimes.  But do not let him fool you.  He hears you and knows better. Ideally his furever home will have a large yard to play in and the time t...read more about SIRIUS
  BANE (Adoption Pending)
***Adoption Pending*** BANE is a sweet and well mannered dog who is very smart.  He is so smart that if he gets bored he will find things to do like opening doors to see what is on the other side.  He prefers being outside where he can sniff, explore and watch the neighbors. always looking for some entertainment.  However, he does prefer a big yard with a tall fence because he has learned how to jump over short fences and even how to open gates. BANE has a large vocabulary and knows: sit, stay, leave it, wait, stop, shake, speak, lay down, belly rubs, bring your bowl, turn and lets go for a walk.  Being a typical Malamute, if he decides he is not in the mood to participate in his human's commands he will lay down and do the "I am a rock" pose until he gets his way. Other mellow dogs, both big and small are always fun to play with, but BANE prefers to go home to his quiet house where he does not need to share his humans.  BANE also enjoys ...read more about BANE (Adoption Pending)
  WINTER
***In Foster and Not Available for Adoption Yet*** WINTER was found in the woods and wandering around on roads so we know little about her personality.  She may be a mixed breed and estimated to be around 4 years old.   WINTER is currently in a foster home that has the patience, knowledge and time to help her learn to trust people and learn how much fun being a dog can be.  In the foster home she is being given encouragement, where she will be trained to walk on a leash, and slowly socialized with other people and dogs.  Slowly WINTER's fosters will be able to bring out her true personality.  Goofy?  Diva? Sweetie? Maybe all of those traits and more! Once it is determined that WINTER is ready for her furever home, we will announce she is ready to be adopted to enjoy the life she deserves. In the meantime, if you can open your heart and home to other dogs who need ...read more about WINTER
  ZEKE
ZEKE is a sweet boy who is happiest when he is hanging out with his humans.  His craves a daily routine of walks, food, naps, play time, treats, more naps, exploring his yard, dinner and ready for bed by 7 pm.   If he is not happy about something, he won't hestiate to tell you his thoughts with a few Whoo Whoos. A home with a fenced yard for ZEKE to enjoy the sunshine, sniff the air and watch the neighborhood would be ideal.  ZEKE knows many commands; sit, lay down, stay, come and  load up are a few.  He could easily learn more with a few treats to motivate him. ZEKE does well with other large dogs, especially if they are female, and with older considerate children.  He doesn't realize his size, therefore it is best he does not play with small dogs, or young children.   If you take ZEKE on an adventure in a car he will fuss and make some noise because he is not a big fan of car rides.  But once he arrives at t...read more about ZEKE
  DAISY
DAISY lives up to her name as a bright flower that's ready to bring sunshine to everyone's day! She is a spirited youngster ready to squirm into the center of your life (and the life of everyone you meet).  She loves to play, run zoomies and relax in her crate after she tuckers out. DAISY knows many commands; sit, come, heel, down and stay.  She likes treats and will be easy to train further.  She enjoys taking walks on her leash and would appreciate a big yard to run around in. Playing with other large dogs is another favorite activity especially if there is a good game of chase.  However, due to her size, it is difficult for DAISY to play with small dogs.  Daisy will blossom in a family that will appreciate her cheerful spirit while giving her a chance to know that being lazy has its benefits, too!  DAISY's future furever home should have plenty of space for her, time to exercise her, tra...read more about DAISY
  LUDO
LUDO is a big, goofy purebred Wooly Malamute who loves people.  He is smart and knows several commands; sit, down, come, shake.  He is treat motivated and will be easy to train further.  An ideal day for LUDO would start with a car ride to a park, mountains, lake, anywhere he can walk and enjoy the outdoors.  If there is an opportunity to run off leash he will do many zoomies and return to you for some loving pets.  Once he is back home he will be ready for more pets, snuggles and belly rubs followed by a nap. LUDO is very demure and very mindful! LUDO should be an only furbaby in the house because he insists on receiving all the attention.  He has not been around human childern so a slow introduction to older considerate kids would be best.   LUDO will be a great companion and is looking for a loving home who will spend time with him, spoil him and has a large fenced yard for him to relax in.
  ABERDEEN (Abi)
ABERDEEN who also comes to ABI is a sweet girl who loves her adult humans.  She is friendly and enjoys pets, treats and just hanging out with people.  ABI knows basic commands of sit, stay, come and down.  She is smart and it would just take a few treats and being consistently worked with to learn more. Currently, ABI is not walked much, but does enjoy to the chance to get out and explore on a leash.  Being a typical malamute she does pull on the leash at first, especially if she sees a critter. Since she does not receive daily or long walks she will need to be eased into it and see how she does. You can leave ABI home alone and she will nap while waiting for your return.  However, do not leave any tasty snacks out on the counter because she cannot pass those up. ABI prefers to be the only dog and Queen of  the home. She especially does not like small dogs or other small animals.  Young children are also not ideal, however she would...read more about ABERDEEN (Abi)
  NANUK
NANUK is an amazing young boy who loves everything. People, dogs, treats, toys, you name it he is eager to learn and appreciate life.  He knows sit, down and go to bed and should easily learn other commands.  He can walk on a leash, but needs more training to learn proper behavior. Another dog in the family to be NANUK's buddy would be great because he loves playing chase and wrestling.  The other dog should be able to match NANUK's energy and enjoy playing too. NANUK can easily jump over short fences and gates, so a home with a tall 6 foot fenced yard would be ideal and a great space to run zoomies. Take NANUK to a river or lake and he will dive right in.  He loves the water!  When it is bath time he does not fight it and enjoys being brushed. NANUK will settle right in to any family, making a great fur baby!
  PIPPIN
PIPPIN is an energetic, playful girl looking for a home that has the time to spend with her and help her grow into a mature adult lady. As a pure bred Alaskan Malamute she shows all the breed characteristics, from sweet and cuddling to the stubborn "I don't hear you" attitude.  PIPPIN enjoys being active with walks, hikes car rides to the river or meeting new friends. Before PIPPIN's current owners adopted her she had no training or manners.  They have been working with her on basic training and already seen great improvement. She is smart and should be able to improve even more with a little deadication.  Since PIPPIN is young everything is new to her which makes her a little shy.  But once she is introduced to a dog or human, she warms up and enjoys playing with them.  She has not had a lot of exposure to children yet, but due to her size and energy it appears she will do well with older, considerate kids. ...read more about PIPPIN

  ABRAM (Courtesy Listing)
COURTESY LISTING Abram  is a big, sweet good-natured boy. He is  a pack dog, much more comfortable around dogs than people. He  walks well on leash [but like most dogs does pull when excited] however, when he sees other people while out on a walk, he becomes shy and hides behind his human.  He has good recall with the people he trusts.  We don't know if he is housetrained as he is being housed outdoors with other rescues. He is currently in a 6' fenced enclosure with dig guards. No food aggression with people or dogs. Abram is shy and it takes time to trust. Loves to hike  in woods for a couple hours a day for exercise and  rides well in the car. Northern-breed experience necessary, and no children cats or little dogs please.  If you are interested in giving this shy but sweet boy a forever home, visit    https://www.cruxrock.com/adoptable-pets/ IMPORTANT - P...read more about ABRAM (Courtesy Listing)
  HUTCH
***In Foster and Not Available for Adoption Yet*** HUTCH is currently in a foster home that has patience and time to help him to trust people and become the great dog we know he can be.  When he was at the rescue's kennels the environment was too overwhelming for a shy boy like HUTCH. In the foster home he is being given encouragement, where he will be trained to walk on a leash, and slowly socialized with other people and dogs.  Once he starts to come out of his shell we will know more about his personality and the type of dog he is meant to be. After HUTCH has learned all the fun activities he can do with people and is ready for his furever home, we will announce he is ready for adoption. In the meantime, if you can open your heart and home to other dogs who need fosters please contact Fosters@wamal.com to learn more.

COURTESY LISTING If you would like to learn more about ELDING please contact Raven Pridemoore or Jasmine Kelly at 509-948-5608 or 509-595-4222 ELDING is a 3 year old Alaskan Malamute/Husky mix. He is a high energy pup who will definitely need a family with a yard or who goes on lots of walks/runs. Due to his imposing size some dogs have not been nice to him, therefore causing him to be mistrustful of other dogs when they first meet. But once he does warm up to the new dog he loves to play and rough house with them. If he is able to burn that energy he is such a good cuddly house dog, but like others of his breed if he doesn't get it all out he can be destructive.  ELDING is crate trained and has a bed that he has made his won.   MAX (Courtesy Listing)
COURTESY LISTING Meet Max! This handsome feller is one of our newest furry friends here at the shelter! He was brought to us as a stray and was unfortunately never reclaimed by an owner. Max is a Malamute/Husky mix around 3 years old. Max is super sweet and lovable to people but we aren't sure how he is with other dogs or cats just yet. He is quite the character, LOVES to talk and has quite the personality! Max would make an excellent hiking or running partner. He can be an escape artist, so he would need a home with a fully fenced yard or maybe even a big enough dog kennel for him to stay in when no one is home to supervise him! If you are interested in meeting Max, contact the Humane Society of the Ochocos today at shelterstaff@thehso.org IMPORTANT - Please Note:  Max is being listed as a courtesy. COURTESY LISTING If you would like to learn more about FOX please contact   NWSNOWDOGRESCUE@AOL.COM   OR HOPE4HUSKIES@GMAIL.COM Fox is a beautiful boy that is a malamute husky mix. He is a great boy with a whole lotta love to give. He is a gentle giant with a gentle soul. A home with maybe 3 steps at max would be ideal. Fox has had a very rough start at life and we are sure that has lead to him not wanting to share bones, food, bed etc. Resource guards some. Over the months he also started to not get along(fight) with the male dogs in house one being a malamute but that is pretty much normal for a young mal. So Fox needs a female only or only dog home. No cats, livestock or small dogs. Kids over 8 years old that know boundaries! And folks that understand that and respect a dog and their cues.  Fence is mandatory and also a trainer ideal. An ideal furever home would have the time to spend with LOKI and an understanding of the northern breeds.  LOKI may be known as the God of Mischief but he is also known as the God of Time.  This pup will help you remember your past, enjoy your present and look forward to your future with him! He is shy around most strangers, but warms up more quickly to women than he does men. He can take a while to warm up to those he doesn’t know and he picks and chooses who he wants near him.  He is neutered and has shown his foster mom a high prey drive with small animals - cats, small dogs and chickens. He loves to play with a tug rope, but don’t leave it unattended unless you want to come back to shredded pieces. He loves to play as well, including stealing gloves off your hands. You will have a hard time getting them back, but he is learning "leave-it". Titan is an escape artist personified. He loves playing with other dogs (30+ pounds) and loves going for walks. His leash manners leave something to be desired but when on his head halter, he is so much easier. Kylo is not good with cats and is a bit rough for small dogs.   ROXY (Courtesy Listing)
COURTESY LISTING Meet Roxy the rockstar! She's a siberian husky, approximately 2.5 years old. In some ways Roxy is not your average husky: she's on the lazier side. She's happy to go for a walk or hike but isn't going to destroy your house if she doesn't meet her step quota. Roxy is also very social with other dogs her size and energy level! We like to say that Roxy makes an excellent "gorge dog" because she's so versatile for the area that we live in. Roxy does have some typical husky traits: she sheds A LOT, be prepared for lots of brushing and hair explosions and she has a very high prey drive, so no kitties or small, fast-moving creatures. COURTESY LISTING If you would like to learn more about GABE please email bridgetdvolk@gmail.com or text 415-319-0308. Gabe is a 6 year old Alaskan Malamute/ Husky mix. He is a gentle, loyal dog with generally low energy. Gabe is being rehomed because he has been exhibiting severe isolation anxiety, and I no longer have time to give him the attention he needs with busy work and school schedules. An ideal home would be with someone who works from home or has multiple people living in their household. He is very well-mannered and sweet when around humans, and spends much of his day napping. Gabe adores cats but can sometimes be reactive and jealous toward other dogs. He would prefer to be the only dog in the household, or live with a very easygoing dog of a similar size. Gabe was severely neglected and not trained as a puppy. COURTESY LISTING If you would like to learn more about TRAMP please contact Hope4huskies@gmail.com Tramp continues to improve and is getting more cuddly, mainly because he is so jealous of the other dogs in the home he has to do what they do.  He listens better than the standard husky. He is fully potty trained and using a dog door within a week which shows how smart he is. Rain doesn't bother him and he keeps going out appropriately.  On walks he is confident if we take the same route and if the big dogs are with him.  He does get nervous on different routes if they aren't there.  He is smart and he is learning left, right, and straight to make walks easier.  He already knows sit and down.  The other dogs in the home have taught him to tell others "Hi," so he isn't too nervous about strangers.  He even sits to put his harness on to go for walks because he thinks it is so exciting.  Tramp will ma...read more about TRAMP (Courtesy Listing)
